The opinion of one random hipster blogger who moved to New York from across the country is not terribly important. However, the Coney deriding language Carey uses is heard all to frequently. It is heard often on the streets of Manhattan and the more gentrified parts of Brooklyn, and popped up online quite fiercely during the recent "Curbed Cub" on Curbed.com.
Clearly, Coney Island has problems. These problems are being worked on, and hopefully a viable redevelopment plan will come to fruition in the relatively near future. In the meantime, though Coney Island is still a pretty amazing neighborhood, like none other in the world.
