As frigid temperatures hit Coney Island and we get acclimated with the new year and the coming transition with a new president that carries with him hope for change, the Coney Island saga continues its tragic second act. Desperate wishes by all Coney lovers as we anticipate what we hope will eventually turn out to be a victorious third act. But of course, not without the usual anguish and comedy that our cause brings us.
Last week as Thor Equities allowed their voice for Coney Island (TheFutureofConeyIsland.com website) languish, it turns into a Belgium porn site link page. Thor Equities’ business practices throughout the city has outraged someone to the point of calling them Whor Equities with a new website which keeps a stern hostile eye over them.
More controversy has a city official’s plan for an 64 million dollar outdoor amphitheater at Asser-Levy Park in Coney Island stalling. Marty Markowits who envisioned the plan has recently been receiving more opposition. The outcry is that it’s basically a waste of needed tax dollar money and would create more noise for the neighbors (When has that been a problem for amusement enthusiasts?), and take away free concerts and outdoor space.
Cha Cha’s doesn’t have to worry about outdoor space. They got it when Thor Equities changed their locks on them. Other boardwalk shopkeepers are still waiting word for lease extensions that could spell triple rent hikes.
And finally, but never least in Coney was the much anticipated Municipal Art Society’s “ImagineConey” presentation of their collection of ideas for Coney’s future. Besides some redundant issues that have nothing to do with imagining Coney by some boring speakers, according to many, the MAS meeting made no splash. Though their collection of ideas was a wonderful and needed ingredient in the general process there needs to be a focus on the immediate and the more possible. The MAS has been around for over 100 years and has done wondeful work towards perserving and creating vital aspects of NYC, so we hope they still have more in store for Coney Island.
Which brings us to the current problem. The best probable solution would be to make sure the city acquire most of the amusement area and work with smaller amusement operators to keep Coney thriving during the next few years as bigger plans become more doable and make better sense – assuring that the Coney tradition and character remain the main aspect of its future.
